Shirley Temple Black was an American actress, singer, dancer, and diplomat who achieved international fame as Hollywood's number one box office draw from 1934 to 1938. As a child icon during the Great Depression, she starred in classic films like Bright Eyes and Heidi, and she was the inaugural recipient of the Academy Juvenile Award in 1935. After retiring from her film career at age 22, she transitioned into public service and politics as a member of the Republican Party. She went on to build a distinguished diplomatic career, serving as the United States Ambassador to Ghana and to Czechoslovakia, as well as the first female U.S. Chief of Protocol.
