Béla Békéssy was a legendary Hungarian fencer and hussar officer defined by his versatility and sacrifice. A dominant force in the early 20th century, he secured eight national titles and won a silver medal in individual sabre at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. While serving as a Captain in the 2nd Hussar Regiment, he was killed in action during World War I in July 1916. Today, he is honored as a "soldier-athlete" through the fencing clubs and streets that bear his name.
